Report: Leeds United not renewing contract for 24 year old whose contract expire in the summer
Seven Whites players have contracts that expire in the summer, but it looks like a decision has already been made for a number of them.
With only a few months left, veterans Luke Ayling, Stuart Dallas, and Liam Cooper are among the group, and it is anticipated that they will not be extended a contract. In January, the latter went on loan to Middlesbrough, and his departure was marked by emotion.
With Jamie Shackleton, Ian Poveda, and Lewis Bate rounding out the group, Sam Byram is the only other clear-cut regular first team member in a similar circumstance.
Though the Athletic reports that a decision has already been made on Poveda’s future, Daniel Farke spoke yesterday about the chance that Shackleton might receive a new contract.
Leeds unlikely to offer Poveda new deal
Poveda is believed to have played his final game for Leeds after being loaned to Sheffield Wednesday on deadline day, and it is rumoured that the club is “inclined” not to extend an offer to him.
Following Leeds’ victory against Bristol City last week, Farke stated that Poveda had requested to leave the team in order to pursue regular playing time, which wasn’t available at Elland Road.
The Leeds boss acknowledged that they were “reluctant” to offer Poveda a new contract, but the signs are clearly in the writing given his recent form, his lack of playing time, and his desire to join Sheffield Wednesday.
Poveda expressed his joy at leaving the team the previous week, but he also acknowledged that, as this is merely a loan move to South Yorkshire, he will now need to demonstrate his worth in order to secure a long-term deal.
That being said, regardless of the division Leeds is in this summer, it seems like there may be a change of leadership at the club.
