‘Strange one’: Leeds want to sign ‘very intelligent’ playmaker, could be a last-minute deal – journalist

Football Insider has been informed by sources that Southampton has defeated Leeds United in the race to recruit Burnley forward Manuel Benson this month.

Transfer reporter

Pete O’Rourke said in an interview with the latest episode of Football Insider’s Insider Track Podcast that the Saints and the Clarets are getting closer to finalising a deal for the 26-year-old to be sent on loan for the duration of the season.

Benson’s weekly pay increased once Burnley was promoted, but wage contributions are reportedly still being settled.

But a general agreement has been reached, and Leeds’ attempt is now expected to fail.

Football Insider reported on January 19 that although an offer was accepted, Benson’s loan deal to Southampton had not progressed.

After that, Leeds moved up to the top of the standings and entered advanced negotiations with Vincent Kompany’s team for the versatile forward, but their Championship opponents have now edged them out.

Benson has only made five appearances for the Clarets in all competitions, and he has only seven times been selected for the Premier League matchday squad.

He demonstrated his skills in the Championship during Burnley’s victorious season that resulted in promotion, with 14 goals and five assists.

The Belgian signed an extension with Turf Moor just last summer, so his deal there is valid until June 2027.

With their 2-1 victory over Preston North End on Sunday, January 21, Leeds moved up to fourth place in the Championship, four points behind third-place Saints.

On Wednesday, January 24, they will play their next match against Norwich City, and on Sunday, January 28, Southampton will play Watford in the FA Cup fourth round.
