In January 2020, Tottenham acquired Bergwijn from PSV Eindhoven, and the Dutch player quickly made an impact on the team.

Bergwijn helped Tottenham defeat Manchester City 2-0 in February with a magnificent volley on his debut.

Two years later, the Netherlands international helped Spurs overcome Leicester 3-2 by scoring two goals late in injury time after coming off the bench.

‘He’s a very good player’

Aside from these remarkable instances, Bergwijn fell down Antonio Conte’s hierarchy at Tottenham and was unable to have much of an impact.

For an estimated £28 million, Spurs sold him to Ajax in the summer of 2022. Since then, he has made 58 appearances, scored 22 goals, and provided eight assists.

It appears that there is interest in having Bergwijn return to the Premier League this winter, as reported by Romano.

He stated, “There’s interest from clubs in England and Saudi Arabia, though I can’t name names at this moment, so there could be a chance for Steven Bergwijn to leave Ajax in January.”

“Ajax has not yet provided an indication regarding his cost; he is still a key member of their team. He’s a very talented player, in my opinion; he simply needs to play the right position.

Bergwijn showed flashes of quality at Tottenham

Bergwijn was a player who Tottenham was right to try their luck with, and in his time there, he showed flashes of brilliance.

Unfortunately, it didn’t work out for him in the end. However, one can’t help but wonder how things may have turned out if the league hadn’t been stopped in March 2020 and how he would have performed if Ange Postecoglou had taken over as manager instead of the previous one.

There appears to be a possibility that Tottenham supporters may witness him back in the Premier League as early as next year.
