Following Sunday night’s 2-1 defeat at home to Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool have issued a statement insisting that “significant human error” is not an excuse for the wrongful disallowed goal of Luis Diaz in the first half.

Why couldn’t referee Simon Hooper change the decision?

The video assistant referee (VAR) Darren England, who was suspended for Sunday’s Nottingham Forest v Brentford match and Monday’s Fulham v Chelsea clash, mistakenly informed Hooper late on that Diaz should have been awarded a goal.

England, who had erroneously believed Diaz was offside, restarted the game with a Spurs free-kick, believing VAR had upheld the offside decision.

However, Hooper was made aware of England’s error only when the ball was next out of play for a Liverpool free-kick, meaning there was little he could do at that stage.

International FA Board (IFB) protocols on the use of VAR state that “if play has ceased and is about to resume, the referee shall not review the play except in the case of a mistaken identity or in the event of a sending off offence relating to an act of violence, spitting or biting, or to grossly offensive, insulting or/or abusive behaviour.”

According to The Sun, there is only one situation that might have resulted in the game being redone: if Hooper had gone back and decided not to award the goal retroactively. This would have been a “fundamental breach of the protocols and the Laws of the Game,” according to the study.

The Football Association may have been forced to agree with the Premier League that the match should be replayed in the event that the game was deemed void if Tottenham had complained about the alleged infringement of the law.
