James Maddison injury update as Tottenham star’s suspicion leaked after Arsenal draw
James Maddison was instrumental in Tottenham’s 2-2 draw away at Arsenal.
After sustaining a knock to his knee during Sunday afternoon’s north London derby, Tottenham’s James Maddison will have a knee scan, it has been reported. The England international played a key role in his side’s 2-2 draw against Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal, which denied the Gunners the chance to take home the trophy.
Since joining Spurs from Leicester City in a £40million deal over the summer, Maddison has scored twice and provided four assists in his first six Premier League games. He has been used in a No 10 role in Ange Postemoglou’s system and has proven to be the creative midfielder that Spurs have needed for a long time.
So it was understandable that they were concerned when he went down at the Emirates in pain after jarring his knee following his foot getting caught in the turf. He required on-field treatment, but he was able to continue and was replaced at the end of the first half by Pierre-Emerick Philippe.
According to reports, it is expected that Maddison will have an arthroscopic procedure on his knee later this week to check for any damage, although he did not seem to be in pain when he took to the media after the final whistle.
James Maddison has sustained a knee injury against Arsenal and is expected to be out for the rest of the season, although the extent of the injury is likely to be revealed on Monday morning.
Maddison’s initial assessment of the injury is positive, which will come as a relief to many.
It would be a huge blow for manager Paul Postecoglou, who is fourth in the Premier League and on the verge of confirming his team’s status as title contenders.
On Sunday, Tottenham fought back from a goal down to draw with Arsenal, with Heung-min Son stepping up as a leader.
The forward struck twice for Tottenham, first levelling from close range from a James Maddison cross in the second half, after the Gunners had taken the lead on the stroke of half-time thanks to a deflected strike from Saka, who was left with no chance thanks to a deflection off Cristian Romero.
The Gunners then took the lead in stoppage time when Saka scored from the spot, having been awarded the goal by VAR after Romero handled the ball in the penalty area, with Arteta’s side trailing 1-0. Arteta’s side’s lead was short-lived, however, as Maddison pounced on a loose ball from the far post, deep in Arsenal’s half, and played Son into the box to slide home.
