As the summer transfer window approaches, Birmingham City is getting set to assemble a team capable of competing at the top end of the Championship.

After joining St Andrew’s last summer, Chris Davies led the Blues to an incredible 111-point victory in League One. They are now aiming to contend for promotion to the Premier League.

A League One star is rumoured to be on their radar as they begin to enhance their playing team in anticipation of a return to the second division.

Birmingham make offer to League One star

Kwame Poku, a forward for Peterborough United, has received a contract offer from Birmingham, according to GIVEMESPORT. Poku’s contract with the Posh is set to expire at the end of next month.

However, if the Blues can prevail in the competition for his services, they may be able to find a replacement for Kieran Dowell, who rejoined Rangers following his loan stint in the second half of the season.

Similar to Dowell’s position at St Andrew’s, where he played centrally or on the right of the attacking midfield trio, the Ghanaian international primarily plays as a left-footed attacker on the right of a front three.

After failing to score or provide an assist in 12 Premiership games for the Scottish powerhouses during the first half of the season, the Rangers loanee recorded an outstanding haul of five goals and four assists in 19 League One matches.

However, if the Blues can agree to sign Poku at the end of his Peterborough contract, he might offer even more quality than the former Norwich City midfielder.

Based on his 2023–24 and 2024–25 League One performances, the Ghanaian international may be able to contribute more as a goal scorer and goal creator on the right side, cutting in on his left foot.

In just eight more appearances than Dowell in the third division, Poku scored more than twice as many goals and supplied twice as many assists, as shown in the above table.

Although Adams can boast that he has more career goals in the Championship than Ings, who has only scored 27 goals compared to the Scotsman’s 49, the 32-year-old’s 27 goals in the second division is by no means a small total given that he has only ever participated in three campaigns at the level.

As an alternative, the three-time England international has frequently terrorised Premier League defences when healthy, so he might join Stansfield and May and give the game an air of authority.

Since journalist Leanne Prescott once praised Ings, it’s not as though his reputation as “clinical” is coincidental. The elderly attacker undoubtedly wants to end his lengthy career with a boom by proving that he still has it in him at St. Andrew’s.

It goes without saying that anyone with ties to Birmingham would want Adams to return just to complete his Blues story.

However, if Ings is also free, it might be more profitable to take a chance on the 5’10” striker to perform well.
