When Mathys Tel arrived at Tottenham Hotspur with only minutes remaining in the winter transfer window, he was a highly sought-after player.
In order to motivate a better second half of the season in North London, Ange Postecoglou hoped the young Bayern Munich loanee would use some of the lessons he has gained from Harry Kane on the training pitch.
But it hasn’t been the case, which is rarely Tel’s fault. The Spurs still have the option to purchase him in the summer for £47.5 million, a price they might attempt to reduce.
Tottenham urged to ‘prioritise’ Tel as teammates let club down
Since his arrival, Tel has scored three goals in all competitions and has been used by Postecoglou more and more as the season has gone on.
On Sunday, April 27, the Frenchman celebrated his 20th birthday under unmemorable circumstances as Tottenham was soundly defeated by Liverpool in their last attempt to win the title.
TV pundit Ian Darke, in an exclusive interview with Tottenham News, feels that, considering what he has demonstrated in a struggling team at such a young age, Tel should take precedence over a permanent contract in the summer.
Darke also used the occasion to attack Postecoglou’s defence, whose tactics have been deemed to be the main reason the Lilywhites have failed this season.
“Tottenham should prioritise him if that’s an option on his deal rather than an obligation,” he said.
“He’s certainly not getting a look-in at Bayern Munich anytime soon, so at the right price he’s definitely available. Whether they feel there are other options even better than him, I don’t know.
“But he’d be a sensible signing. Too many have let Spurs down this season. They need a ‘thou shalt not pass’ mentality and it has been completely lacking for them. The attacking players compensate for that and haven’t performed as well as they’d have hoped. Tel, though, has a bright future and it would be sensible to keep hold of him.”
Tel desire will also affect Spurs situation in summer
Tottenham Hotspur may try to reduce the agreed-upon optional price to purchase Tel this summer, according to a report published in The Times on April 25.
Bayern may reject this strategy right away, or they may be willing to engage in talks with Levy, who has demonstrated his ability to handle such circumstances on numerous occasions over the years, despite his shortcomings.
Although Tel has shown promise, Spurs are unlikely to rely on him as their main option for the upcoming campaign; it would be too much to anticipate.

The question of whether Tel himself would choose to stay in North London for the long run or go back to Bayern and evaluate his future from Bavaria with his representatives is another crucial one.
It probably depends on whether Spurs win the Europa League, which is the case with everything in N17 at the moment.
