Premier League issue explanation as VAR overrules offside call in Liverpool vs Tottenham

Liverpool fell behind early on in Sunday’s huge game against Tottenham but they were able to restore parity quickly after a VAR check ruled that a Luis Diaz goal should stand

In Sunday’s crucial Premier League title match at Anfield, Liverpool responded to Tottenham with the aid of a VAR intervention. Prior to a check determining that Luis Diaz’s goal should be allowed to stand, it was first marked offside.

Dominik Szoboszlai was initially flagged offside after he appeared to have gone beyond the Spurs defence line and set up Diaz. However, the Premier League acknowledged that a VAR check had assisted the officials in identifying a mistake.

Dominik Szoboszlai was onside

In a social media post, they stated: “VAR checked the referee’s call of no goal for Liverpool – and determined that Szoboszlai was in an onside position in the build-up and recommended that the goal was awarded.”

Referee Thomas Bramall’s confirmation that the first offside call had been overturned caused a commotion in Anfield.

Prior to this, Dominic Solanke had startled Liverpool supporters by breaking the tie with an incredible header from a Spurs corner. However, it only took the Reds four minutes to tie the score.

In the twenty-fourth minute, Alexis Mac Allister gave Arne Slot’s team a crucial lead, turning the tide of the contest. Additionally, Cody Gakpo punished some careless Spurs defence with a third goal just after the interval to virtually conclude the game early.

“But once Liverpool get level, the painful thing to say is that unfortunately the debate is over for a period until Manchester United become successful again and win leagues.

“It should cause real tremors over at Old Trafford. The idea that Liverpool – which is obviously a great football club – will be the most successful club in English football after today, that really should cause heartache and pain, because it took a lot to get ahead of Liverpool. They were miles ahead when Alex Ferguson took over.”
