Frank Lampard fumes after Plymouth’s chief tormentor stays on the pitch against Coventry City

Frank Lampard acknowledged that his Coventry City team should have lost to relegation-threatened Plymouth Argyle, but he maintained that Mustapha Bundu, the main tormentor for the home team, ought to have been sent off before he scored two goals and provided an assist in the 3-1 loss at Home Park.

The Sky Blues player was sent off the pitch when forward Bundu went in late on him in the 28th minute, hooking the midfielder’s leg and then shoving him in the face. His teammates responded angrily to the violent challenge, which led to a brawl.

After 12 minutes, Bundu scored again and set up Ryan Hardie three minutes later. Just before halftime, Haji Wright took the lead with a tap-in.

In the twenty-eighth minute, forward Bundu rushed in late on the Sky Blues player, hooking his leg and then pushing him in the face, sending him off the pitch. The harsh challenge was met with an angry response from his teammates, eventually resulting in a brawl.

Bundu scored again after twelve minutes, and three minutes later he assisted Ryan Hardie. Haji Wright gave the team the lead with a tap-in shortly before halftime.

“It was a difficult afternoon and disappointing result, clearly,” said Lampard, speaking after the 3-1 defeat which was littered with defensive errors.

“This was a game that was completely dominated by the mistakes that we’re all aware of, or types of goals they are going to score against you”

“We knew we’d have a lot of the ball and it’s the mistakes that lead to transitions and set-pieces, so if you are short on those on the day, they are a team of giants, of big boys and you know what’s coming with every goal kick, every throw-in and every set-piece that’s coming in. And you have to deal with that and the be more dynamic to break the low block, which we were not at that level today.”

Reacting to the goals, in which a number of players didn’t come out very well, in particular Milan van Ewijk and Brad Collins, all Lampard would say was: “It was a collective issue.”

“Plymouth deserved to win today and once that decision is made I am not arguing with the result. But you can talk about the decision; it’s a clear red card – another one, another one in terms of big decisions that haven’t gone our way. I have got no more to say on that.”
