Former Sheffield Wednesday and Nottingham Forest star faces uncertain future amid West Ham United contract wait
According to reports, Michail Antonio, a former forward for Sheffield Wednesday, won’t find out his fate at West Ham United until the end of the season.
Over the past ten years, the 35-year-old has been an invaluable member of the Hammers, scoring 83 goals in 323 games since joining from Nottingham Forest.
However, after breaking his leg in a vehicle accident in December, the Jamaican international has not been able to play.
Antonio’s contract is set to expire at the end of the current campaign, but The Telegraph claims that he must endure a tormenting wait for his future.
According to the article, he won’t know if West Ham would extend his contract until the end of the season.
When it comes to contract extensions, the Premier League team usually prefers to wait as long as possible, but Antonio’s situation is said to be more complicated.
When the frontman will be healthy enough to play for the first team again is currently unknown. Talks about his pay and how crucial he would be to the Hammers’ cause when he returned would also come up.
Although Antonio will be 36 by the end of the upcoming season, it is difficult to envision the former Owls striker being turned away from the London Stadium without any suitors.
Due to his 84 appearances for Sheffield Wednesday between 2012 and 2014, he is well-known in Yorkshire.
Just getting back on the pitch will help Antonio, who said that his crash in December had left him “near death.”
“It [seeing the remains of the car] gave me a weird feeling in my stomach,” he stated in an interview with the BBC in March. I simply became aware of how near death I was. “The police came and when they found me I was in between the two seats. I wasn’t actually in the driver’s seat.
“They said it looked like I was trying to climb out of the window, but because my leg was so badly broken the pain probably stopped me from being able to get out.
