Rugby league in mourning as grand final hero footy legend dies after stellar career in Australia and England

The Manly Sea Eagles have honoured the late Phil Lowe, a forward who won a grand final and was born in England. Lowe passed away at the age of 74.

In a thrilling 13-10 triumph at the SCG, Lowe scored the only try for Manly, which made the 1976 grand final victory over the Parramatta Eels unforgettable.

Due to his effort in that game, he will always be remembered as a crucial component in one of the Sea Eagles’ most cherished victories.

One of the highlights of his career was winning the World Cup with the final Lions team in 1972, which cemented his place among rugby league’s greatest forwards.

Phil had an equal influence off the pitch as he had on it.

He was a hero to many, including KR owner Neil Hudgell, who saw him not just as a wonderful athlete but also as a beloved friend and a sincere, kind-hearted person. He was well-known for his humility and modesty.

‘Phil was an incredible man. A unique instance. Being a Grand Final winner on both sides of the globe, he accomplished everything in the sport.

He received numerous decorations for his country.

Phil carried it out with humility and modesty. Growing up around the sport in the 1970s, he was my hero.

None of the people who saw Phil Lowe in action will ever forget what they saw. Over the past 20 years, he became a very good friend of mine, and we shared a lot of wonderful experiences.

“He had a very kind heart, but he was always direct and to the point.” Everywhere he was respected. I’ll never forget our final vacation to Australia. He picked Rob Crossland and me up from the Manly dock and took us to his local, the Steyne Hotel.

About forty years after hanging up his boots, he was still held in high regard there. His numerous friends will miss Phil terribly. Hull KR, a true red and white, has lost a legend and a piece of its heritage.
