Leeds United drop out of Championship top two as title rivals suffer fresh injury scare

Leeds United is no longer guaranteed a spot in the Championship. Following their 6-0 thumping of Sheffield Wednesday at Portman Road this afternoon, Ipswich Town has surpassed Daniel Farke’s team.
The Tractor Boys got off to a fantastic start, seizing the lead at the fifteen-minute mark. After some excellent work by Wes Burns, forward Omari Hutchinson scored.
After the visitors failed to handle a corner well, Cameron Burgess doubled Town’s lead in the 37th minute, making things even better for Town. Before the second goal, Burns, an Ipswich wide player, had a knock and had to be substituted. Prior to the Euro 2024 play-offs, Burns was recently added to the Wales roster.
At the end of the first half, Nathan Broadhead struck a third goal to ensure that Wednesday would not win. Not to be outdone, Hutchinson scored his second goal of the afternoon in the 48th minute for Ipswich. To make matters worse for the Owls, substitute Ali Al-Hamadi scored a late double.
Town has won seven of the previous eight Championship games. With eight games left, they now have 81 points as a result of the outcome.
However, if the Whites overcome Millwall by a two-goal margin at Elland Road tomorrow afternoon, they would pass Ipswich and leaders Leicester City in the standings. Farke’s team is coming off a 12-game winning streak going into the contest.
This weekend’s league games for Southampton, in fourth position, and Leicester are nonexistent. Chelsea and the Foxes square off.

Leeds has an opportunity to significantly put pressure on the Foxes in the title fight by winning on Sunday and rising to the top of the league, especially with Leicester City playing Chelsea in the FA Cup this weekend.
When Leicester was leading the league by ten points at the end of 2023 and commentators were already organising their celebration and parade, things had taken a dramatic turn for the worse.
Farke will put his team in the lead even though they will have played one more game in the title contest by winning against a depleted Millwall.
Leeds has a significant lead going into the match, and they now need to take advantage of it in what will be a challenging matchup.
