‘Good piece of business’ – Leeds United deal lauded by Daniel Farke after Chelsea loss
In Leeds United’s defeat to Chelsea on Wednesday, Mateo Joseph netted two goals, and Daniel Farke praised the work the team did in signing him to a new deal last month.
After the brace against Chelsea last night, it appears to be even better to tie Mateo Joseph down to a new Leeds United contract through 2028. After seeing the 20-year-old’s career take a significant leap ahead, Daniel Farke was eager to give the club’s principal negotiators a lot of credit for that deal.
On Wednesday night, Joseph scored his first goal as a professional in the first half at Stamford Bridge and then added another one in the second half. After a superb display that had Leeds on the verge of extra time, the striker scored a late goal from home.
After the game, Farke would shower the young player with accolades, praising his humility, work ethic, and game-development as his main assets. Joseph will be bound to Elland Road until 2028 by a new deal that was confirmed just last month.
“I truly enjoyed working with Mateo during the preseason. He’s a really good, young player,” Farke remarked. It is regrettable that he had a chronic injury that kept him out of action for several weeks. Additionally, it is difficult for a young player to break into a team like ours because we are competitive and a strong team by Championship standards.
“We work with him on a daily basis and what I like a lot about him [is] he’s humble, he’s down to Earth and he likes to work, he likes to work additionally, he’s always open for hints and individual work and we try to improve him from each and every day. Today it was also not a gift or coincidence I played him because just a few key players were out.
“He earned this appearance in the starting line-up. He was already there with a good performance in the last cup round away at Plymouth [Argyle], but, obviously, for offensive players, it’s even more pleasing when you are there with end products.
“He played excellently today and then he deserved to be a bit in the spotlight with his two goals. It was a major step in his development and we are all happy we have him and that he signed, just a few weeks ago, a long-term contract.
“It was a good piece of business. Many, many compliments to our key people and we are happy we have him.”
