RB Leipzig’s Timo Werner isn’t as good as Son Heung-min, but Alan Hutton can still see Tottenham’s reasoning for acquiring the Germany attacker.
Son, 31, will be out of commission for the all of January and possibly a significant portion of February should South Korea perform as predicted and advance far in the AFC Asian Cup, which is taking place in Qatar this winter.
This month, as the Africa Cup of Nations is taking place, Ange Postecoglou’s team is being significantly hindered by injuries and international calls-ups.
Because of this, the Australian is looking for help, and Werner, a former attacker for Chelsea, is supposedly getting close to moving to North London.
Werner is en route to Tottenham for a medical examination and to finalise his loan transfer from RB Leipzig, according to a report posted by Fabrizio Romano on Twitter on Tuesday, January 9.
Romano stated that “all documents are ready and set to be signed between Spurs and RB Leipzig.” It is believed that Spurs will have the option to purchase Werner permanently for £14.6 million (€17 million).
Although the news took Hutton by surprise, he can see why Postecoglou would want Werner despite him struggling in his spell at Chelsea.
Hutton told Tottenham News that he was “shocked” by the news when the question was posed to him. It appeared out of nowhere.
“I understand, I get it. He is a versatile player who can play a variety of roles even out wide. He interrupts like Son, who is currently travelling to South Korea.
“I understand that Tottenham is seeking reinforcements; Werner has experience playing for a team under duress and is familiar with the league.”
“He’s not a son; he only gets one shot and succeeds.” Werner isn’t that; he needs four or five chances, but he can bring something to that team since he has speed and a unique quality.
“But it appears like it will happen soon, so maybe he can get started right away.”
Between 2020 and 2022, Werner was a player for Chelsea; however, in 89 appearances across all competitions, he only scored 23 goals before returning to RB Leipzig.
Werner’s play has not improved since he returned to Germany, and in just 14 appearances this season across all competitions, the Germany international has managed just two goals. Additionally, he’s only made two starts in the Bundesliga.
