Report: Striker throws big hint about January farewell amid Tottenham links

According to BILD, there are concerns that Serhou Guirassy, a striker who is reportedly being pursued by Tottenham, will leaving Stuttgart in January based on his behaviour this week.Since Son Heung-min is probably going to miss a whole month of football in the New Year owing to the Asian Cup, Tottenham may need to make an acquisition to bolster their attack. The Lilywhites have struggled to convert chances thus far this season.

Guirassy is one of the centre strikers that Spurs have been linked to; two months ago, TEAMtalk said that the Lilywhites might compete with West Ham and Newcastle for the player in January.

The Guinean forward, whose contract is believed to include a release clause of €17.5 million (£15 million), is being watched by Spurs, according to journalist Dean Jones, who made this revelation on the Ranks FC podcast the previous few weeks.

Guirassy hints at a farewell amid Tottenham links

With the news that Guirassy has dropped a significant clue regarding his future, Bild’s most recent update may help Tottenham’s prospects of acquiring the striker.

The 27-year-old scored the first goal for his team in the 54th minute of Stuttgart’s 2-0 victory over Borussia Dortmund in the DFB-Pokal semifinal on Thursday. He is reported to have spoken to the supporters in the MHP Arena with “very personal words” following the match.

The report claims that after the final whistle, Guirassy shouted to the Stuttgart supporters, “thank you for everything,” which “almost sounded like farewell words.”

Because of Guirassy’s attractive release clause and low cost, I have no doubt that a number of European clubs would have gotten in touch with his representative to discuss a January transfer.

To be sure, Spurs are not among the teams in the lead in the competition to sign the center-forward, at least not with any solid evidence.

Furthermore:

Due to a break option in the contract that took Sergio Reguilon from Tottenham to Manchester United, manager Erik ten Hag of the Red Devils has revealed that the player’s loan period may terminate in January. In his first two years with the Spurs, Reguilon played a pretty consistent role in the team’s success. He joined in 2020. He did, however, lose favour under Antonio Conte and was loaned to Atletico Madrid for the previous campaign.

Due to injury concerns, the Spaniard was only able to make 12 appearances for Atletico Madrid in all competitions, playing just 317 minutes of football over the entire season (Transfermarkt).

Following his summertime return to North London, Reguilon was declared surplus to requirements after not performing well enough to secure a spot in Ange Postecoglou’s team. That being said, many were surprised when he eventually joined Manchester United.

Given that multiple injuries had decimated Erik ten Hag’s first team, most notably to Luke Shaw, the 26-year-old was brought in on loan for the season to serve as an emergency backup.

Reguilon has impressed Manchester United supporters with his performance in his nine appearances this season (Transfermarkt), and he seems to be content at the club.

Sergio Reguilon

Will Reguilon return to Spurs in January?

But according to a comment made by Ten Hag, which Fabrizio Romano shared, if either partner decides to call it quits, the agreement might terminate next month.

“Ten Hag confirms there’s a potential break clause in Sergio Reguilon’s contract valid in January,” reads the statement from Romano.

The quote from Ten Hag says, “We have to make a final decision on Reguilon but also there is Spurs who are involved in that conversation as well.” This is not completely new information, though, considering that The Athletic disclosed back in September that the deal included a break clause.

Given that Destiny Udogie is playing well and Ryan Sessegnon is returning from injury, I don’t see Spurs being the ones to cancel the loan deal. Manchester United appears to be happy with Reguilon, but they have players returning from injury as well, so perhaps they will send Reguilon back.
