Tottenham plotting January swoop for Brais Mendez
The Spanish publication Sport claims that Tottenham Hotspur is planning a January raid on Real Sociedad star Brais Mendez.
Last summer, the North London team signed a new box-to-box midfielder who seemed to be an attempt to bolster their engine room. A few players were named as possible targets, with Conor Gallagher being recommended as the top choice.
But in the end, Spurs decided to cling onto Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg rather than signing anyone. However, the Dane has struggled to earn a spot in Ange Postecoglou’s starting lineup this season, and there have been rumors that the former Southampton player may depart the team in January in order to play regularly for a different team.
Tottenham would therefore need to sign a new midfield player if the 28-year-old were to go. Spurs seem to have begun looking into the market in case Hojbjerg decides to leave the team in January.
Now that Chelsea has started the season with Mauricio Pochettino, Gallagher has established himself as a vital member of the starting lineup. Consequently, if Tottenham makes a play for him next year, it is very doubtful that they will be able to sign him, so it appears that they have chosen to turn their attention to other targets, with Mendez now appearing as a viable contender.
Mendez to Tottenham
Tottenham is reportedly interested in acquiring Mendez, and they may launch a formal bid to do so during the winter transfer window, according to a report from Sport. The article also states that Méndez’s current deal includes a £52 million release clause, meaning Spurs will need to shell out a lot of money to get him.
The 26-year-old, who signed with La Real at the start of the previous season, had a strong first season under Imanol Alguacil’s leadership, finishing in the top-four and earning a Champions League spot.
The Spanish player has made 13 appearances in all competitions this season, tallying five goals and dishing out four assists. He has maintained his impressive form.
The midfield player might be a wise addition for Tottenham if they are able to sign him because he has shown flashes of his brilliance while playing for Real Sociedad.
To strengthen their engine room, it will be intriguing to watch whether Tottenham decides to formally declare their interest in signing Mendez in January.
