Tottenham to pick between ‘Prem star’ and Uruguay international for first January transfer
Tottenham will reportedly look to strengthen Ange Postecoglou’s defensive options in the January transfer window.

As they plan their first January transfer window addition, Tottenham may choose between Uruguay international Sebastian Caceres and Bournemouth star Lloyd Kelly. Prior to the winter transfer window, Spurs have been linked to both players, with Ange Postecoglou possibly looking to enhance his defensive options.
This season, the North Londoners have been outstanding defensively and have led the Premier League in scoring. Postecoglou is still eager to bolster his team in the winter market, though.
Prior to the window, Spurs had been most frequently associated with defenders. In the early going of the season, Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven have developed a strong center-back partnership; however, more depth is needed.
Lloyd Kelly of Bournemouth has been connected to a transfer to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium to support Postecoglou’s outstanding duo. Spurs have reportedly conducted “detailed checks” on the 25-year-old, and he may be a target, according to Give Me Sport.
Postecoglou is reportedly also interested in Uruguayan defender Caceres, according to the Mexican newspaper Record. Since joining Club America in 2020, the 24-year-old has performed admirably, and he may be moving to Europe.
January is probably going to be a priority for finding a new center-back because Romero and Van de Ven are the starting duo and there isn’t much depth beyond them. In the summer, Davinson Sanchez left for Galatasaray, and it appears that Eric Dier will also depart when his contract ends at the end of the current campaign.
Despite the dearth of depth in the defensive department, Dier has only made four matchday squads for Spurs this season and has not appeared at all. In contrast, during all 11 of Spurs’ opening games of the previous season, the 29-year-old played the whole 90 minutes under Antonio Conte.
Therefore, Postecoglou’s top priority for January will be signing a new defender. A replacement for Harry Kane is no longer as urgent to find thanks to Son Heung-min’s better play in front of goal and Brennan Johnson’s arrival in August.
The simpler of the two possible deals may be a move for Kelly from Bournemouth. The former Bristol City player’s deal with the Cherries expires in June of next year. Bournemouth is likely to want to recoup monies for the left-footed defender rather than let him go for free, so a stealthy cut-price transfer could be an option.
Postecoglou is eager to maintain the momentum from the Premier League season’s outstanding start. Having won their first nine games, his team leads the standings, and a new defensive acquisition might even solidify their position atop the standings.
