I Feel Blessed Stormers secure Sacha’s deputy

The Stormers have retained another key player on a three-year contract as Project 2029 continues to take shape.

The club announced on Wednesday that flyhalf Jurie Matthee will stay in the Cape through until 2029, underlining their drive to secure its core for the years ahead.

A product of Paarl Gimnasium, Matthee forced his way into the professional ranks after impressing for Maties in the Varsity Cup and has made significant strides since his Stormers debut in late 2024. With 21 caps already to his name, the composed playmaker is poised to play an even bigger role over the next three seasons.

Equally comfortable taking the ball to the line or controlling territory with his boot, Matthee’s calm presence has stood out – none more so than in his Vodacom URC Man of the Match performance against Benetton in Treviso earlier this season.

Director of rugby John Dobson welcomed the extension.

Jurie has proven himself to be extremely coachable and applies himself in a way that gives those around him confidence.

He has already shown that he is much more than just a steady hand, he is respected by teammates and opposition alike. You underestimate Jurie’s abilities at your peril.

We are delighted to keep him here long-term and are really looking forward to seeing him develop further within our system.”

For Matthee, the decision was simple.

I grew up dreaming about pulling on this jersey and playing for this team. Since coming into the environment I have grown as a player and look forward to seeing where this journey takes me.

P“I feel blessed to represent this club and our fans. The vision that we have here for the future is incredibly exciting and I am so glad I get to be a part of it, he said.
