SMX Next – Motocross is set to commence this Friday, May 30, from the Hangtown Motocross Classic

Tuesday, May 29, 2025, Morgantown, WV With SMX Next – Motocross scheduled to start this Friday, May 30, from the Hangtown Motocross Classic, the torch has been passed for the next stage of the amateur development program following an exciting SMX Next – Supercross campaign in which Alexander Fedortsov won an AMA National Championship. The first of three Scouting Moto Combine Presented by U.S. Air Force Special Warfare events in the summer, which will take place over the weekend of the Michael’s Reno Powersports Hangtown Motocross Classic, the second race of the 2025 Pro Motocross Championship, sanctioned by AMA Pro Racing, has invited a total of 20 prospects.

“After five successful races for SMX Next – Supercross, we are eager to welcome the most promising young prospects in amateur motocross to Northern California to kick off SMX Next – Motocross, where they will go bar-to-bar on one of the most legendary racetracks on the planet at Hangtown,” said Jim Perry, Program Director for the Scouting Moto Combine. “Our continued collaboration with each of the sport’s competing manufacturers has resulted in a talented group of 20 young athletes and a coaching staff filled with decorated former racers who will provide invaluable mentorship and guidance. Despite being a relatively young program, the success of SMX Next has already been established and now plays a pivotal role in the development of aspiring racers.”

In collaboration with GASGAS, Honda, Husqvarna, Kawasaki, KTM, Suzuki, Triumph, and Yamaha, a carefully chosen group of potential riders has been invited to take part in the season’s inaugural event, which will include 20 of the best A and B class horses. This group includes a mix of racers who have previously competed in SMX Next as well as a fresh bunch of riders who will be taking part in the program for the first time. This Friday afternoon, the field will face two 25-minute plus two-lap motos.

Leading the mentoring of this group of potential athletes is a distinguished group of Rider Coaches who will share their vast knowledge and experience to help these young athletes on and off the track. Broc Glover, a six-time Pro Motocross Champion who has been a coach since the program’s beginning and still provides his services as a committed and kind leader, serves as the group’s anchor. Michael Byrne, a consistent leader who led Team Australia to victory at the 2024 FIM Motocross of Nations, Broc Tickle, a former 250SX Supercross Champion and current Kawasaki test rider, and Ezra Lusk, an AMA rider representative, a former 125cc Regional Supercross Champion, and a multiple-time Pro Motocross overall winner, will join him.

Mike Bonacci, Team Manager of Muc-Off/FXR/ClubMX Yamaha, Gareth Swanepoel, a former racer and lead trainer at Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing, and Christina Denney, the SMX Next – Motocross Event Coordinator, WMX Championship Coordinator, and a veteran SMX team manager, will provide additional support.

The increasing numbers of graduates continue to be eligible for factory-level professional possibilities as SMX Next’s influence and reach continue to increase both locally and abroad. Haiden Deegan, the defending Pro Motocross 250 Class Champion, the current back-to-back SMX World Champion, and the recently crowned 250SX Divisional Supercross Champion, has set the bar high for what the program can achieve, but the 250 Class field also includes a strong group of young riders who advanced through SMX Next.

Chance Hymas of Team Honda HRC Progressive, Julien Beaumer of Red Bull KTM Factory Racing, the 2024 Rookie of the Year, Ryder DiFrancesco and Casey Cochran of Rockstar Energy GASGAS Factory Racing, Daxton Bennick of Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing, Gavin Towers of Phoenix Racing Honda, and the division’s newest members, Drew Adams of Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki, Cole Davies of Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing, and Alexander Fedortsov of Muc-Off/ClubMX/Yamaha, who won the SMX Next – Supercross championship, are all included in this group. Among them is Enzo Temmerman, a rider for Monster Energy Kawasaki Team Green, who will compete in the first two Pro Motocross events before starting his last campaign in the Monster Energy AMA Amateur National Motocross Championship.

Although the two motorcycles will be the main attraction at the Hangtown Combine, attendees will also learn about other significant facets of the sport that take place off the racecourse, such as diet, training, and advice on navigating the many levels of media attention. Before racers put on their helmets, form a queue behind the starting gate and struggle to determine who will win at Hangtown, these classroom-style sessions serve as the basis for the event.
