Tottenham have made their first proposal to sign Genoa defender Koni De Winter

This summer’s transfer window is when Tottenham Hotspur must deal with their defensive issues.

Clean sheets have been hard to come by, and the Lilywhites have given up far too many goals in the Premier League. Their collective issues are evident in their 37 Premier League games with six clean sheets, which has been a constant expense to the team.

This season, Spurs have had to contend with a plethora of injuries to their key defensive players. On the pitch, that has significantly hampered the consistency and performance levels. Due to chronic injuries, both Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero, the team’s first-choice centre backs, have missed a large portion of the season.

In order to address their defensive issues, Kevin Danso was loaned from RC Lens during the January transfer window. Daniel is searching for a different central defence option, even though Danso is expected to join Spurs’ squad permanently in the near future because the team is required to purchase him from RC Lens at the conclusion of his original loan period.

In the past few weeks and months, Koni De Winter of Genoa has been connected to a move to Tottenham. Spurs reportedly increased their chase of the 22-year-old after making an inquiry about him earlier this month.

According to a report from the Italian publication La Repubblica, Tottenham has made Genoa an offer of £20 million to recruit Koni De Winter this summer. Spurs are the first to try to sign the defender, although Juventus and Inter Milan have also expressed interest.

Since joining Genoa from Juventus in 2023, De Winter has improved steadily. He started out on loan before a buyout clause was activated last year. In his 56 appearances for Rossoblu in all competitions, the Belgian has so far scored three goals and provided one assist. He has had an inconsistent season, missing more than 70 days of play due to a hamstring injury.

The versatile defender has been an incredibly reliable player for Patrick Vieira’s team, now ranked 13th in Serie A, since he returned from injury in late December. Genoa is eager to sell De Winter this summer for a price between €25 million and €30 million, even though he has a contract at the Luigi Ferraris Stadium till 2028 (Transfermarkt).

Tottenham has offered £20 million, which is more in line with the Italian team’s assessment of the player. White Hart Lane would be a wonderful fit for the Antwerp native, who can also play midfield and right-back. Given that Atletico Madrid is interested in Romero, he would be a wise long-term choice to possibly replace him.

The Tottenham managers’ initial bid for De Winter makes it abundantly evident that they are serious about the defender and want him in the team for the upcoming campaign.
