New injury could throw wrench in Pittsburgh Steelers draft plans

The Pittsburgh Steelers’ intentions for the QB draft were in the New Orleans Saints’ grasp.

A four-time Pro Bowl quarterback, Derek Carr, getting hurt might push a quarterback up their wants list and land Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders.

Tennessee and Nico Iamaleava are at odds.

According to some reports, Carr had a shoulder injury and may need surgery, which would limit his availability for the season. The injury didn’t surprise the Saints, who had already begun researching the best quarterback possibilities.

Prior to the start of free agency, Carr and the Saints reached a renegotiated agreement, and following this season, New Orleans might move on. Spencer Rattler, who started six games in 2024, is still the Saints’ backup right now.

Although it is unlikely that Sanders will finish in the top three, the Saints at No. 9 still pose the greatest threat to him, as he might drop all the way to No. 21 to the Steelers. In an interview with Tom Pelissero and Ian Rapoport, he described his visit to the Steelers on Thursday as “great.”

“The Steelers were great. I understand it. I understand why they win so much, why Coach is the way he is. (Mike Tomlin) resembles my dad a little bit. They have the same principles,” Sanders said.

The whole quarterback class has been thoroughly scouted by Pittsburgh, starting at the top. Last week, Jaxson Dart of Ole Miss visited, Tyler Shough of Louisville was hosted by the Steelers early in March, and Kyle McCord of Syracuse is set to visit the following week.

It might have an impact on how the Steelers approach the NFL Draft at quarterback if Sanders leaves the board much earlier than they do. The organization has not yet received a specific timeline and is still awaiting Aaron Rodgers’ response.
