Prior to the summer transfer window, Kalvin Phillips has been linked to an emotional homecoming to Leeds United.

“His time at West Ham didn’t go particularly well for him. At Ipswich this season, he’s playing a lot more. But obviously, playing in a side that’s struggling, the opportunity if Leeds go up next year, it would just seem right.

“It’d just seem a really good fit for everyone. I think he’d be welcome back with open arms. And that stability in the Premier League that Leeds would need, it’d be the best signing that they could make in the summer.

“I think you look in the midfield. Ao Tanaka, Joe Rothwell and Ethan Ampadu have obviously been injured. Ilia Gruev plays in there. Kalvin Phillips plays ahead of all of them. Kalvin Phillips and Ampadu, potentially, as a holding midfield pair in the Premier League next year. It would be a key signing.

“I think that’s one way you go, OK, we’ll not necessarily break the bank, but we’ll pay whatever it takes. And I think the player would welcome it as well.”

Leeds must invest smartly this summer

Leeds needs to pay attention to the difficulties that have plagued the freshly promoted teams this season if they are promoted.
