Leeds United at risk of points deduction – Wyness: ‘Red Bull can’t save them’

Keith Wyness, the former CEO of Everton, asserted that Red Bull, a new investor, “can’t save” Leeds United from possibly breaking the Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR). The 66-year-old, who ran a football consultancy advising elite clubs after serving as CEO at Goodison Park from 2004 to 2009, stated the Whites will still need to sell first-team players this summer despite the thrilling announcement on the latest episode of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast. Red Bull has acquired a minority ownership stake in Leeds, which will bring in additional capital investment, the club confirmed last week (30 May).

The Yorkshire giants announced a loss of £33.7million in their latest 2022-23 accounts following a further loss of £34million in 2021-22.

Under PSR, Leeds will be allowed to lose a maximum of £61million over a three-year period ending in the 2024-25 campaign.

Leeds must sell first-team stars despite Red Bull investment, says Wyness

If that number is broken, there could be fines and points deducted; this season, Everton and Nottingham Forest have already lost points for infractions. “Until we know the full details, it’s hard to know if a lot of cash has changed hands with this Red Bull deal,” Wyness said on Football Insider’s Insider Track podcast. Equity, shirt sponsorship, and maybe another type of sponsorship are what appear to be involved. Leeds is sailing close to the wind because they owe other clubs significant sums of money for players.

As we’ve previously discussed, they’ll need to generate some player sales to pay for this PSR issue. “I don’t think they can be saved by this Red Bull deal. It’s more of a structural problem.
