Springboks sweat over Jasper Wiese as brain fade sending off threatens Ireland series involvement

Leicester Tigers and Springboks forward Jasper Wiese red-carded in the Premiership.

Leicester Tigers and Springboks forward Jasper Wiese red-carded in the Premiership.

Springboks head coach Rassie Erasmus could be without star number eight Jasper Wiese for the two Test matches against Ireland in July with the forward.

Due to suspension, Wiese may miss the two Test matches against Ireland following his red card in his final Leicester Tigers game.

Wiese red-carded

The dominant World Cup winner’s tenure with the Leicester Tigers came to an abrupt end when referee Karl Dickson gave him the boot for acting dangerously during a breakdown. During a ruck in the 68th minute of the Exeter Chiefs match, Wiese lifted up the opposition’s forward, Ross Vincent, and drove the back-row player into the ground.

Dickson’s red card was eventually given after several replays, ending the outstanding time the Bok loose forward had spent at Leicester.

The 28-year-old must now anxiously await the conclusion of his disciplinary hearing, as it may result in a suspension for the two games against Ireland. It is unlikely that Wiese’s suspension will be affected by the fact that he was not expected to be available for South Africa’s match against Wales at Twickenham prior to the Ireland series. As he reveals his “ultimate Rugby World Cup dream,” Siya Kolisi challenges prospective Springboks players. No scheduled game could be used to serve as a suspension fulfilment because Leicester Tigers were not able to advance to the Premiership semi-finals.

He may face a ban after the two Test matches against Ireland due to his disciplinary record. After receiving three yellow cards in the Premiership later that year, he was suspended for two games. In 2021, he was banned for four matches for a ruck offence. Leicester Tigers ended their disappointing season with a win at Welford Road, defeating Exeter Chiefs 40–22 despite the red card.

Wiese received the award for Tigers Players’ Player of the Season earlier this week. After making 79 appearances for Leicester, he won the 2022 Premiership title with a standout Man of the Match display.

Potential replacements

Wiese appeared destined to be the Springboks’ first-choice number eight this season after Duane Vermeulen retired, but his suspension will present a chance for other candidates. It now appears that Stormers star Evan Roos will get a chance in the Test match against Ireland, as Kwagga Smith will have fully recovered from his injury by then.
