‘No Promotion Chance’ – Neil Warnock predicts Leeds v S’oton playoff final clash on Sky Sports

Neil Warnock and Sky Sports pundits predict Leeds United v Southampton playoff final clash

For the Championship playoff final between Leeds and Southampton, Neil Warnock, Francis Benali, and Curtis Davies have offered their predictions.

The Saints defeated West Brom 3-1 at St Mary’s to secure their spot in the championship game, while the Whites advanced to Wembley with a 4-0 victory against Norwich at Elland Road after a goalless draw in the first leg.

When asked live on Sky Sports on May 17, what team they thought would win the championship, the panel was evenly divided. The two teams met on the last day of the regular season, with Russell Martin’s team emerging victorious, 2-1.

“I used to manage Leeds and I’ve been here watching Southampton with the supporters, so I’ll say a draw,” Warnock said, which incurred laughs from his fellow pundits.

“Then anyone on penalties. There’s no way I’m committing. Could you imagine me saying Southampton with Leeds fans, if I go to another game? No way. No chance.”

After that, Benali supported “his team” and said Southampton will win at Wembley, before Davies offered his thoughts.

“I’ll have to go the other way then. If Neil is being neutral and he [Benali] is picking Southampton, I’ll be Leeds,” he said.

“I think it’s going to be tough because of recent history and stuff like that, and Southampton are a very good team. But I’ll go Leeds.”

Leeds United v Southampton is the £100m+ game

Most people would have anticipated that Leeds, Southampton, and Leicester would return directly to the Premier League if you had asked them before the season began.

Although Ipswich has reclaimed that position, Daniel Farke’s team now has the opportunity to vault itself back into the top division, but they will need to perform significantly better than they did on the last day of the season.

Farke will have to choose between trying to match Southampton’s possession-based style and staying steady in defence and counterattack, or going toe-to-toe with them.

The team has got consecutive clean sheets and has found its goalscoring touch once again after a barren spell, and the fans will be raucous in London.

It won’t be easy, and this is arguably the most even playoff final there has been in a while. So it’s no surprise that the panel was split, and there will be plenty more of this to come in the build-up to the game
