Leeds Utd plot ambitious swoop for £42m star as conditions of deal are revealed

If Leeds United is successful in gaining promotion to the Premier League, they want to make a bold summertime move for Kalvin Phillips.

Although the England international is well-liked at Elland Road, there’s little doubting that since departing Leeds in 2022, his reputation has suffered greatly.

Although it’s hard to blame Phillips for turning down a tempting offer from Manchester City, the £42 million trade hasn’t gone at all as planned.

The 28-year-old, who has only made 31 appearances for the team since signing in the summer of 2021, has not been able to reach his full potential under Pep Guardiola.

During the January transfer window, Phillips was in high demand and eventually signed a loan deal to play for West Ham.

But this move has also proven to be unsuccessful.

After putting in a number of poor displays in his first nine games for the Hammers, the Man City loanee has been rusty, and West Ham is unlikely to sign him permanently in the summer.

Phillips might instead make a spectacular comeback to Elland Road. In the event that Leeds is promoted this season, The Sun reports that they intend to re-sign the midfield player.

According to the report, Leeds feels that a transfer fee of approximately £30 million might persuade Man City to sell, and they want to give the 28-year-old the opportunity to “rebuild” his career.

Leeds need to be promoted in order to secure deal

It should go without saying that in order to sign Phillips, Leeds must win promotion this season. With seven games remaining, the team currently holds the second position in the Championship.

Although Southampton can’t be completely eliminated from the race just yet, Leeds’ primary rivals at this time are Leicester City and Ipswich Town.

Leeds has had the greatest run in the division as of late.In 2024, Daniel Farke’s team has not dropped a league game and has an excellent defensive record.

There’s a significant potential that Leeds, Leicester, or Ipswich finish with more than 95 points and do not automatically advance to the Championship due to how fierce the fight is at the top end.

Leeds will be hoping that they have enough left in the tank to cross the finish line, so they can give Phillips their all come summertime.

Leeds would be well-stocked in this position if they can lure the Man City midfielder to Elland Road, with players like Phillips and Ethan Ampadu to rely on in midfield.
