Don Goodman believes Coventry City could prove the sternest test for Leeds United in their quest to earn automatic promotion to the Premier League.
With eight games remaining, Daniel Farke’s team leads the Championship; nevertheless, Leicester City is tied for first place in points and has a game in hand in an intense promotion struggle.
With two games remaining, Southampton, who is in fourth place, is nine points behind Ipswich Town and is only one point behind them.
On the last day of the season, Southampton will be at Elland Road, but Goodman thinks that a trip to Coventry on April 6 may be just as important.
According to the remaining schedule, Southampton is scheduled to play them on the last day. Before they played that one, they would have preferred to have finalised the agreement, Goodman told MOT Leeds News.
“The other one that jumps out is Coventry City – they are a good team who are fighting hard to get into the top six.
“Then you have Hull City as well, and also a Middlesbrough side who are finding form. Can they go unbeaten? Of course they can.
“Would it surprise me if they lost one of those, or at least dropped points? No, it wouldn’t – that’s the nature of the Championship.”
Leeds United’s remaining Championship fixtures
With the exception of one, Leeds has won all 13 of their league games since the start of the season. This is an incredible run of play.
Farke’s guys should get a lot of credit for the way they have made things better; they were in serious trouble at the end of December and are now at the top of the list.
From this point forward, it is in their hands. They will immediately return to the Premier League if they play flawlessly the entire season.
Nevertheless, it will be very difficult to win all eight of these remaining games. Ipswich, Southampton, and Leicester will all lose additional points at the same moment.
It will all come down to who can maintain their composure the longest in the last few metres. Leeds has had incredible success at home this season, so the rest of the schedule—including Southampton—should be easy.
