Leeds United: ‘Completely Ridiculous’ Georginio Rutter made admission after 2-0 win v Millwall
The fact that Georginio Rutter is almost at 20 assists for Leeds United this season is, in Phil Hay’s opinion, “completely ridiculous.”
The journalist for The Athletic claimed on Monday, March 18, on The Square Podcast that the Whites’ 2-0 victory over Millwall on Sunday, March 17, was a result of their “slivers of class.”
With the 21-year-old Rutter setting up both goals against the Lions at Elland Road, he continued, saying that Daniel Farke’s team is becoming “very hard to compete with” for teams throughout the division.
“Leeds just had those slivers of class that made the difference and that is why time after time managers like Neil Harris are sitting down and saying ‘we can’t realistically compete with or hope to beat this kind of team over and over again because they’re just far too good and it’s why Leeds are probably going up because they play like this’,” said Hay.
“They have guys like Gnonto who contributed little before Christmas but is now scoring at a healthy rate, guys like James who is now nearly up to 20 goals and assists combined, Rutter who is almost up to 20 assists alone, which is completely ridiculous.
“Just that element and that degree, which is very hard to compete with if you’re in mid-table or a club fighting relegation. It’s actually become difficult to compete with if you’re up at the top, too.”
Georginio Rutter on fire for Leeds United
Rutter put in yet another fantastic display for Leeds against Millwall, setting up goals for Dan James and Willy Gnonto to bring his season total of assists to 18.
With just over ten minutes remaining, the French forward proved to be very skilled as he shrugged off his opponent and laid the ball off for James to seal the victory.
Even though the Whites’ first half performance wasn’t particularly outstanding, they still possess the quality to complete tasks even when they’re not at their best.
Following Leicester City’s FA Cup match against Chelsea over the weekend, the victory sent Farke’s team to the top of the Championship table.
After they return from the international break in a few weeks, the German manager will be aiming for his players to continue the consistency they have shown this calendar year.

Although it had no bearing on the outcome, referee Stephen Martin’s call confused supporters both during and after the game. A referee during the 0-0 draw against Hull City who also sent Joe Rodon off.
On Monday morning, veteran Premier League referee Gallagher offered his assessment on Ref Watch on Sky Sports. He claims he doesn’t understand how Martin failed to see Cooper’s foul on Sunday.
“I believe there ought to be a fine. He bumps into Rodon and manages to get a touch on the ball, although I believe that was more chance than skill. Gallagher once commented, “I just don’t understand how you can do that,” earlier on Monday.
