‘AN ABSOLUTE NIGHTMARE’… £165,000-A-WEEK PLAYER TOLD HE SHOULD NEVER HAVE LEFT LEEDS UNITED
One of the best players Leeds United has produced in recent years is Kalvin Phillips, but the midfielder has had difficulty since leaving Elland Road to play for West Ham United and Manchester City.
Kalvin Phillips was a major factor in Leeds United’s promotion to the Championship and subsequent stellar performance in the Premier League during a single season.
Phillips improved and elevated his game under Marcelo Bielsa, the head coach of Leeds at the time.
When the 28-year-old moved from Leeds to Manchester City in the summer of 2022, there were high expectations for him because he was a formidable player.
After failing to have an impact at City, the England international midfielder went on loan to West Ham United.
Phillips’ performance at London Stadium has been lacking. The midfield player has appeared for the Hammers as a substitute twice in the UEFA Europa League and has made three starts in the Premier League.
Stan Collymore comments on former Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips
According to former England international and Liverpool striker Stan Collymore, Phillips made the wrong decision by moving from Leeds to City.
In CaughtOffside, Collymore stated of Phillips, “I don’t think anyone is really surprised the 28-year-old hasn’t been included in the Three Lions’ latest squad.” When he started playing for West Ham at the beginning of the season, his form collapsed. He’s experienced a complete nightmare.
“The loaned money An active example of why it might not be ideal to approve certain signings is a midfielder for Manchester City. There’s no way he’ll make it back into the England squad in time for the Euros, even if I’m sure he had a huge pay boost for leaving Leeds to join City and earning a tiny treble.
What is his preference? – The opportunity to represent England and maybe win the nation’s first significant international trophy since 1966, or a treble of winners’ medals to which he made little contribution?
My View: Kalvin Phillips was right to leave Leeds United for Manchester City
I believe that in the summer of 2022, Kalvin Phillips made the right decision by moving from Leeds United to Manchester City.
At the time, the England international midfielder, who earns £165,000 a week (SalarySport), was having success with Leeds. His potential to be a star for City was evident.
And moving to City from Leeds was a step up. The Whites are now participating in the Championship, and the Citizens have a chance to win the treble for the second consecutive year.
While Phillips’ experience hasn’t been great, I still applaud him for leaving Leeds to try to make a difference in a far more competitive squad.
