‘Unbelievable’: Danny Murphy discusses if Leeds can finish in top two, gives damning Southampton verdict

Following another round of results on Tuesday, there is a lot of interest focused on the fight to finish in the top two spots in the Championship, and Danny Murphy believes Leeds United has a good opportunity.

Despite winning Tuesday night at Elland Road against Stoke City, their tenth league victory in eleven games, Leeds is still in third place. Leeds won the rematch by a slim margin of 1-0, exacting revenge.

With Bristol City leading Ipswich twice, it appeared as though Leeds might have taken second place. However, the incredibly talented team led by Kieran McKenna overcame a 3-2 deficit to win. Leif Davis motivating the winning team.

Tonight, Southampton hosts Preston at home. A challenging match where Russell Martin’s recent struggles have made things a little less easy. With a victory tonight, they would be just two points behind Leeds in third place.

After defeating Sunderland away from home last night, Leicester is still in first place and three points ahead of Ipswich. On Wednesday morning, Murphy shared his thoughts about the run-in on TalkSPORT (06/03, 10.10AM).

“What an amazing game against Leeds.” It’s between Leeds and Ipswich, in my opinion, after they [Leicester] cross the line. I’ve got a small soft place for Leeds, so I was cheering for them the other week,” he told me.

Danny Murphy says second place is between Leeds and Ipswich

Ipswich is back on track, and its efforts during the January transfer window are showing results. One Leeds target, Kieffer Moore, for instance, has scored five goals since leaving Bournemouth on loan.

It seems like a shootout between Ipswich and Leeds for second place with ten league games remaining. Although Ipswich continues to surprise everyone with their recent play, Leeds is undoubtedly the superior team.

Given what Southampton is capable of, it would be foolish to rule them out of the contest for the top two, but as things stand, and as Murphy predicts, it appears like Leeds and Ipswich will compete.
