Michigan State to pay Louisiana for canceled football game in 2024
In 2024, the Michigan State Spartans will reimburse the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns for their postponed football match, as per an MLive.com report.
The initial plan was for Michigan State to play Louisiana on September 14, 2024, at Spartan Stadium in East Lansing, Michigan. The contract wording stated that a $1.1 million guarantee was in place for that contest.
A series of scheduling manoeuvres forced Michigan State to withdraw from the Louisiana game as a result of league restructuring and Army’s admission into a new conference. According to an article on MLive, the Spartans will give the Ragin’ Cajuns $600,000 in liquidated damages for calling off the competition. This amount is $100,000 more than what was originally promised.
The game scheduled for Louisiana, which was announced earlier this month, has been moved to Saturday, September 14, 2024, at Spartan Stadium, where Michigan State will play the Prairie View A&M Panthers. Documents obtained by the publication reveal that Prairie View A&M will receive a $500,000 guarantee for the competition.
Prairie View A&M is a member of the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS)’s Southwest Athletic Conference (SWAC). The Panthers finished 6-6 (6-2 SWAC) in the previous campaign, losing the SWAC title game to Florida A&M 35-14.
With the addition of Prairie View A&M, the Spartans’ 2024 non-conference schedule is officially complete. The Spartans will play two games this fall: on August 31 at home against Florida Atlantic and on September 21 at Boston College.
Michigan State will host Ohio State on September 28, Iowa on October 19, Indiana on November 2, Purdue on November 23, and Rutgers on November 30 in Big Ten play in 2024. Travelling to Maryland (Sept. 7), Oregon (Oct. 5), Michigan (Oct. 26), and Illinois (Nov. 16) will be the Spartans’ league road games.
On Saturday, September 28, the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns will travel to Allegacy Federal Credit Union Stadium in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, to play Wake Forest, as the Michigan State game is postponed. Prior to the full release of the 2024 ACC football schedule, that meeting was first rumoured back in January.
