Leeds United: Crysencio Summerville mocked live on Sky Sports in wild win v Leicester

After a joke about Crysencio Summerville leading Leeds United in attack over the bar against Leicester City was made by a colleague on Sky Sports, Andy Hinchcliffe became ecstatic.

With the Whites trailing Wout Faes’ opening goal late in the first half, the Dutchman fired a shot high into the stands. The Sky Sports pundit responded in real time during the broadcaster’s match commentary.

After a chaotic first half in which the home team was struggling to maintain composure in front of goal, Hinchcliffe laughed heartily when commentator Daniel Mann made a joke about Dutch produce.

As Hinchcliffe found it amusing in the background, Mann stated at 8:41 p.m., “Summerville reminded us that although his nation invented Total Football they also invented the clog.”

Even though it was a fairly clever word play, Leeds United supporters, who are already dissatisfied with Sky’s coverage of the team, probably wouldn’t have taken too well to it.

But on a night where Summerville’s blistering form in front of goal this term deserted him for much of the game it was perhaps not unwarranted, and given the wild finish at Elland Road the 22-year-old himself surely wouldn’t care.

Even so, considering the thrilling conclusion at Elland Road, Summerville, who has been uncharacteristically quiet this season, would probably not have cared on a night when his scorching goal-scoring ability let him down for much of the contest.

The winger, who has 15 goals and eight assists in the second division, is a strong candidate to be named the best player in the Championship this year, sparking interest from Premier League clubs.

However, the Whites’ composure and nervousness against the league leaders in front of their own supporters was a sharp contrast to their professional performance that resulted in a 1-0 victory at King Power Stadium on November 3.

In addition, Summerville found himself in numerous dangerous situations in the second half without looking like the danger man he so frequently is, and the unexpectedly fit Patrick Bamford was unable to return to his goal-scoring ways in 2024. Willy Gnonto and Joel Piroe also squandered much better opportunities prior to the half.

Archie Grey and Connor Roberts both scored their first goals for the team in a dramatic late comeback, but Archie Gray’s goal was ultimately ruled an own goal. The Leicester attackers were also guilty of leaving the door open. Daniel Farke’s defence men were left to step up and close the gap.

In 2024, the Whites won again and narrowed their lead at the top to six points thanks to Dan James’s point-saving play in overtime.
