With a virtually new collection of assistant coaches under his command, Vic Fangio, the new defensive coordinator for the Eagles, will get things done.
Under new offensive coordinator Kellan Moore, the adjustments won’t be nearly as significant on the offensive end of the field.
The presence of famous offensive line coach Jeff Stoutland was already known, and we had a sneaking suspicion, based on Sirianni’s remarks during his January news conference, that assistant head coach and passing game coordinator Kevin Patullo would also be sticking around. On Friday, though, the Eagles said that tight ends coach Jason Michael, running backs coach and associate head coach Jemal Singleton, and wide receivers coach Aaron Moorehead will all stay with the team in 2024.
Coordinator Brian Johnson, senior offensive assistant Marcus Brady, assistant offensive line coach Roy Istvan, and quarterbacks coach Alex Tanney are no longer with the offensive team. Tanney, the passing game coordinator for the Colts, Johnson, the assistant offensive line coach for Istvan Browns, and Brady Chargers, the passing game coordinator, are the current positions.
The decision to retain Moorehead, Singleton, and Michael sends a strong indication that Nick Sirianni and Howie Roseman feel that Johnson’s play calling and Sirianni’s offensive scheme had a greater impact on the offense’s problems in the second half of the season than did the position coaches.
Moore, who will be in charge of his own scheme rather than Sirianni’s, will take over for Johnson as offensive coordinator and play caller.
Stoutland has played for the Eagles for twelve years, three of those under Chip Kelly and five under Doug Pederson. A total of 23 Pro Bowls have been won by Jason Kelce, Lane Johnson, Jason Peters, Evan Mathis, Brandon Brooks, and Landon Dickerson while playing for Stoutland. Before Stoutland arrived, offensive lineman for the Eagles were selected to 21 Pro Bowls in the 50 years prior.
Since being hired in 2021, Singleton has coached two different Pro Bowl running backs: D’Andre Swift last year and Miles Sanders in 2022.
Moorehead is a holdover from Pederson’s coaching staff. He guided DeVonta Smith and A.J. Brown to consecutive seasons with at least 80 receptions, 1,000 yards, seven touchdowns, and a yard per catch of 12.0. There has never been a wide receiver combination in NFL history to post such stats across two seasons.
And Michael, who was also hired by Sirianni initially in 2021, has benefited as much as anyone could have from Dallas Goedert and the other tight ends.
From 2018 to 2020, Sirianni’s most trusted advisor, Patullo, worked with him in Indianapolis, and there never seemed to be a chance he would quit.
Entry-level quality control coach Eric Dickerson (unrelated to the well-known one) is also still on the team.
Apart from Moore, the only other newcomers to the offensive staff are offensive assistant Kyle Valero and new quarterbacks coach Doug Nussmeier, as we previously reported this month.
Along with the Lions and Cowboys were Moore and Valero. When Moore was a quarterback, Valero served as the wide receivers coach for the Lions in 2012 and 2013. From 2015 to 2017, Moore was a player with the Cowboys, where he served as the assistant wide receivers coach in Dallas. Moore served as offensive coordinator and Valero had a variety of roles throughout their tenure as Cowboys coaches from 2018 to 2022, working under both Mike McCarthy and Jason Garrett. In 2008, Valero started working as a student assistant for Bobby Bowden at Florida State (while Nigel Bradham
T.J. Paganetti also switches roles, becoming an assistant offensive line coach and run game specialist after serving as a tight ends coach and run specialist.
After serving as Chip Kelly’s assistant coach at Oregon, Paganetti joined the Eagles staff in 2013 and has worked for the team in seven different capacities: run game specialist and assistant tight ends last year; offensive and quarterback analyst in 2013; offensive quality control and assistant offensive line in 2017 and 2018; assistant running backs in 2019; assistant running game coordinator and assistant running backs in 2020; and offensive quality control in 2021 and 2022. In 2015, Paganetti made a second trip back to Oregon.
The only coaches still in place from the Eagles’ 2017 Super Bowl winning season are Paganetti and Stoutland.
