Opinion: Moyes must sell £60m West Ham duo as a matter of urgency to kickstart summer rebuild

For West Ham United to begin a much-needed summer renovation at the London Stadium, manager David Moyes must let go of two of his most expensive purchases.

As West Ham’s manager at the moment, David Moyes is reportedly under extreme pressure because of the team’s recent results.

Given his dismal recent performance, which has left the Hammers winless in their last eight games, there is a legitimate case to be made for the 60-year-old’s immediate dismissal from his position.

The owners of London Stadium, however, are reportedly in a frantic attempt to convince the Scot to turn things around, and he will probably be given until the end of the season at the very least to demonstrate his abilities.

A massive overhaul awaits whoever takes over at West Ham in the summer. It’s not hyperbole, in my opinion, to suggest that the Hammers require eight new players to compete on all fronts.

We require a left back, a right back, two new center backs, a dynamic and enthusiastic central midfielder, and a new striker.

I believe West Ham will need to trade two of our big-money acquisitions, who have both played horribly for us this season, in order to help make room for the entrance of eight new players.

Nayef Aguerd and Kurt Zouma have been utterly awful for us this season, and Moyes has to stop giving them both so much faith and trust.

Zouma, 29, joined the Hammers from Chelsea in the summer of 2021 for around £30 million (The Daily Mail).

He initially looked like a fantastic signing for us, but has regressed badly over the past six months or so, with his fitness and persistent knee problems a huge concern.

The Frenchman can barely move around the pitch now, and his leadership skills are questionable as well – there is absolutely no way Moyes should have made him captain at the start of the season.

When Zouma’s contract at the London Stadium expires in the summer of 2025, Moyes ought to make every effort to sell him as soon as this campaign comes to a close, in my opinion. It remains to be seen, though, whether any clubs will be ready to take a chance on him given his history of injuries.

Next up is the unfortunate Nayef Aguerd. I believe there is a strong case to be made for his being one of West Ham’s worst acquisitions under Moyes.

For over £30 million, Moyes lured the Morocco international from Rennes to the London Stadium in the summer of 2022 (BBC).

The 27-year-old first made an impression with his lightning-fast speed and skill when in possession of the football after recovering from an ankle injury he sustained during that summer’s preseason.

But it hasn’t taken long to realize that Aguerd isn’t competent enough to play Premier League football.

He is not strong in the challenge, easily spun and turned, and repeatedly loses to easy balls that are thrown over the top.

The Morocco international occasionally exhibits genuinely absurd levels of focus and positional awareness. Though he appears to be someone who has won a competition to play for the Hammers, he is supposedly a professional football player.

To start a summer rebuild, David Moyes just needs to get rid of West Ham’s Kurt Zouma and Nayef Aguerd from the London Stadium. I don’t think either of them is skilled enough to compete at the highest level.

In order to raise the most money possible, hopefully there will be some interest in signing both of the Saudi League players in the summer.
