When the TV hosts disclosed the distance Leeds United supporters must travel to attend away games, John Buchan took aim at them.

Speaking on Don’t Go To Bed Just Yet, he described the “unbelievable” sum of money that supporters must spend in addition to the distance that they must travel to witness every away game.

According to him, if supporters are travelling from Elland Road, they will have journeyed 2926 miles in 2024 alone to see their club play on the road.

Reacting to his clip, Buchan said: “It is nothing new, but it is an absolute disgrace the disregard shown towards fans.”

Broadcasters do not care about Leeds United fans

The broadcasters’ disregard for the suffering of Leeds United supporters epitomises a larger problem in contemporary football: the preference for money over passion.

Broadcasters undercut the spirit of the game, which ought to be about community, camaraderie, and accessibility, by scheduling games without taking into account the financial and logistical challenges experienced by fans.

Fans’ outrageous travel and accommodation costs to every away game demonstrate how the allure of the sport has been eclipsed by commercial interests.

It appears that as football gets more and more commercialised, its essence is being lost, and supporters are no longer valued stakeholders but just customers.

It is disrespectful and bad for the sport’s long-term viability when broadcasters treat supporters with such indifference.

Any Leeds supporter who has made the trip to every game deserves praise, but this isn’t how it should be, and the broadcasters need to be honest.
