Journalist explains what really annoyed Richarlison when Harry Kane was at Tottenham
Since making his comeback to play following groyne surgery in December, Richarlison has experienced an incredible transformation.
The Brazilian is now displaying the kind of playmaking ability in the closing third that persuaded the Lilywhites to give up £60 million to sign him eighteen months ago.
With three assists and a fantastic brace on his return to Goodison Park last week, the striker’s Premier League goal total now stands at ten for the season. Ange Postecolgou will be hoping that the striker maintains his goal-scoring form.
Richarlison is much happier playing down the middle
Pitt-Brooke has recently indicated that receiving a run of starts as a number nine has also contributed to Richarlison’s turnaround, even though there is no denying that the attacker is playing with a lot more confidence today than he was at the beginning of the season or last season.
The journalist stated on the podcast The View From The Lane: “He’s always wanted to play as a number nine, so there’s a connection between the football element and the confidence element.” Harry Kane used to get upset that he wasn’t playing as a centre forward even while he was a member of the squad.
“Now you might say that you shouldn’t have gone to Tottenham in the first place if you wanted to play centre forward and you knew that they already had Harry Kane.
“But he did. And he wasn’t particularly enjoying being out wide or on the bench, because you wouldn’t really if you wanted to play as a striker.”
It would have been easy for Ange to keep Son in the number nine position and start the Brazilian on the left when Richarlison returned from his injury layoff in December.
Though Richarlison, a 26-year-old former Everton player, had struggled in that role at the beginning of the season, the Australian manager nevertheless chose to give him the center-forward role, and Richarlison is now fully repaying his boss’s confidence.
