If Zanoli was interested in the transfer and a loan was obviously available, it’s unclear what the sticking issue was in terms of getting the Italian in.

The fact that the Whites have been making attempts to sign a right-back indicates that they are not very happy with the numbers there at the moment. If the window closes without bringing someone in, it will be dangerous for the quest for promotion.
It should be alright if Grey maintains sufficient fitness on one side and Junior Firpo and Sam Byram together can prevent frequent layoffs on the other, but that would take a lot of luck considering all three have been out of commission recently.
