While Charlie Cresswell’s future at Leeds United is uncertain, Daniel Farke has made indications that he will likely rejoin the team.

The academy graduate is now ranked second in Leeds’ center-back hierarchy behind the constantly brilliant Pascal Struijk and Joe Rodon, a Tottenham Hotspur loanee, who together constitute one of the most dominant combinations at the core of the team’s defense.

Even though other bench players were used in the FA Cup match against Plymouth Argyle, many may have assumed that the Whites would turn to Cresswell in their place because Struijk is sidelined with an adductor issue and club captain Liam Cooper is also out with a groin issue. However, that hasn’t been the case recently.

Even among the replacements, Cresswell hasn’t played much or been seen at all lately. Due to his absence, Farke was forced to make adjustments, starting Ethan Ampadu in a deeper role than his typical midfield position. Luke Ayling was also a center-back possibility, but he left on loan to join Middlesbrough.

After just six appearances thus far, Farke knows that Cresswell is dissatisfied with his position dropping even farther down the hierarchy, but he has also recently questioned Cresswell’s mentality.

“It was evident that Charlie was not entirely content with the circumstances. While he was traveling with us, there were moments when it seemed like he wasn’t really present and attentive. After having an honest and open conversation about it, he stated, “Listen, boss, I totally appreciate everything, but it’s difficult for me.” Being the fourth center back is not something I enjoy. Rank two is what I desire. “I consider myself a starter,” the German said to The Athletic’s Phil Hay.

Additionally, it was recently claimed by Alan Nixon on Patreon that Blackburn Rovers, Middlesbrough, and Leeds’ current promotion opponents, Ipswich Town, were among three teams interested in bringing Cresswell to Ewood Park.

In the midst of all the intense interest in Cresswell, the Leeds defender’s previous team, Millwall, has lately surfaced as a possible destination. Jon Dahl Tomasson’s interest in the 21-year-old has also remained firm in recent weeks.

In order to receive more playing time in the first team under Gary Rowett, Cresswell spent the previous season on loan at Millwall, where he made 30 appearances.

Speaking before of this weekend’s FA Cup fourth-round match at Elland Road against Plymouth Argyle, Farke disclosed (via Phil Hay) that he and Cresswell have had encouraging conversations, suggesting that Cresswell would soon be back in the fold.

The 21-year-old may be forgiven for believing he would be allowed more opportunities with Leeds this season following their relegation to the Championship and after signing an extension to his contract in August to keep him locked down at Elland Road until 2027.
