When the current season ends, Leeds United will lose a defender for nothing, according to two trustworthy sources, and it is known who he will join.

Last summer, the west Yorkshire team’s three-year Premier League comeback came to an end.Leeds’ inability to sufficiently address their defence ultimately cost them, with the custodian and backline being Leeds’ most pressing problems in recent years.

Many prominent players from Leeds had provisions in their contracts that said they may go on loan if Leeds were relegated. Leeds was unable to stop any of these attempts.

Germany international Robin Koch was one of the few Leeds defenders who was among those impacted.

When he was signed in 2020, the 27-year-old from Freiburg cost about £12 million. Koch agreed to a four-year contract, which ends at the conclusion of the 2023–2024 campaign.

Leeds was helpless to stop Koch from returning to Germany on loan when he joined Eintracht Frankfurt in the summer. That meant that after the short-term stint away ended, Koch would be free to sign with any team.

This implied that, effective of January 1, Koch would have unrestricted access to negotiate a pre-contract arrangement with foreign clubs. Two reliable sources claim that Koch has done just that.

Leeds lose Koch for nothing

Both Florian Plettenberg of Sky Germany and Phil Hay of The Athletic have verified that Koch will sign a free agent contract with the team he is presently loaned to in the summer of 2019.

Since Koch has been a consistent starter for Frankfurt this season, the team decided to sign the defender to a permanent contract.

Plettenberg disclosed that an agreement was reached that would last until 2027. Sadly for Leeds, they will lose a player who was signed for £12 million without receiving payment because he will sign as a free agent.

That is solely because Koch’s contract had a loan clause added when he signed with Leeds. Last summer, Leeds would have definitely tried to sell the player outright if that clause hadn’t been present.

Plettenberg said on X, eliminating any lingering questions about the transfer: “DONE DEAL-Robin Koch will join Eintracht on a free transfer in the summer! All completed and signed now.

According to Hay, Leeds made an effort to work out a new contract with Koch the previous year in an effort to safeguard their investment and avoid losing the player for nothing.

Sadly, the club’s efforts were unsuccessful, and as a result, a very marketable commodity will now depart for nothing.
