‘Best player on the pitch’: BBC pundit amazed by ‘selfless’ Tottenham star after win against Newcastle

BBC pundit amazed by ‘selfless’ Tottenham star after win against Newcastle

Son Heung-min was perhaps the finest player on the pitch on Sunday as Tottenham Hotspur crushed Newcastle United 4-1. Pat Nevin made this claim.

Speaking on BBC Radio Five Live, Nevin discussed how the Tottenham captain scored a penalty kick after being taken down by Martin Dubravka to put his team up 4-0 in the second half.

Against Newcastle, Son Heung-min seemed to be playing at the peak of his abilities. As Ange Postecoglou’s team returned to winning ways, Tottenham was just amazing.

Son Heung-min the best player on the pitch in Tottenham win

Son did a fantastic job of setting up both of Spurs’ goals in the first half by finding Richarlison and Destiny Udogie. And after the Newcastle goalie had fouled him, he completed the scoring for the home team.

This season, Son has scored double figures in league goals by finding the bottom corner. And that’s what made Pat Nevin say that Tottenham gave a fantastic performance and that he was the best of them.

“We were talking before the start of the game about the system that would be played, who would it be, and I really thought it’s exactly what would happen. Son would go left, Richarlison would go central. It just seems the right fit. But what you need is someone like Son who’s selfless,” he told BBC Radio Five Live.

“He’s willing to give up that centre forward’s position, he’s got the ability to play as a wide player, as a 10, or a nine. He’s got all of that, but he’s also got the right team spirit as well. And that’s why if you’re going to look for a best player on the pitch today, most people are going to give it to Son.”

Spurs captain a completely changed player this season

It’s amazing that Son has already scored the same amount of goals as he did during the entire previous Premier League season.

Actually, Son was quite bad most of the season, so his return of 10 goals probably flattered him.

However, this season, he appears to be an entirely different player. Undoubtedly, he has flourished since assuming the role of captain. And on Sunday, the South Korean played the role of a captain.

Tottenham is going to be hoping that their victory over Newcastle turns out to be a game-changing one. They are always competitive, though, especially given how Spurs are playing under Postecoglou. This is especially true while Son is healthy and available.
