Tottenham looking to raid Premier League rivals for £42m ace – Romano confirms player wants to leave

Football Insider claims that Tottenham is in a “massive” competition to recruit Kalvin Phillips, a midfielder for Manchester City.

According to reports, Spurs are “monitoring the situation” of the former Leeds player in front of the January transfer window.

After the recent setbacks with injuries and the impending AFCON in January, they are prepared to search extensively for a midfield player during the January transfer window.

After returning from the international break with a problem, Pape Matar Sarr missed the match versus Villa and James Maddison will be sidelined until at least January.

In addition, Rodrigo Bentancur, who made his Spurs debut after a nine-month absence due to injury, played just 29 minutes. Due to an awful tackle by Matty Cash, he suffered an ankle injury, and he will miss the next two and a half months out of action.

As Ange stated yesterday, Tottenham will likely be forced to purchase a new midfield player due to this and the anticipated absence of Sarr and Bissouma in January. For the reasons outlined above, he wouldn’t completely rule out signing a midfield player.

Numerous midfielders, including Kalvin Phillips, a Manchester City outcast, have been linked to them.

Although Phillips paid £42 million for a six-year contract to join Manchester City from Leeds United last summer, the transfer has not proven successful for him thus far.

With the addition of Kovacic and Matheus Nunes, he has further dropped down the hierarchy after failing to establish himself as a first-team regular in the previous campaign. They would rather have Rodrigo and even little Rico Lewis than him.

According to the article, Tottenham, Newcastle, and Liverpool are among the Premier League teams rumoured to be interested in signing him, meaning Spurs will face “massive competition” to get him.

It further claims that the club informed the player in January that “he is free to leave.”

The player is eager on moving as he looks more regular playing time ahead of the Euros. Romano has already stated that Phillips will be leaving City in January, according to his sources who are close to both the team and the player.

Though he hasn’t seen much action at City, he is still a gifted midfielder who excelled under Marcelo Bielsa at Leeds.

And since Ange Postecoglou wants to bring in a player who can start right away, he might be a good addition in January.
