Daniel Farke, the manager of Leeds United, said it was one of the hardest decisions of his career to leave Luke Ayling out of the starting lineup against Swansea City.
Leeds United defeated Swansea City 3-1 at home on Wednesday night, earning a fantastic victory. After falling behind West Brom on Tuesday, the victory saw the Whites climb back to third place.
Joel Piroe, a former Swans player, tied the score shortly after Jamie Paterson gave the visitors the lead just one minute in. Just before halftime, Farke’s team took the lead thanks to a brilliant goal from Georginio Rutter, and the victory was cemented shortly after the hour mark with a close-range finish from Dan James.
However, one prominent member of the ranks was missing. Luke Ayling, a defender who has been a mainstay since joining more than seven years ago, was not included in the squad this season for the first time even though he was fit.
According to Leeds Live, Farke has now referred to the decision to bench Leeds United’s vice captain as one of the “most difficult” of his career. He said:
“I have to say, I’m working in this job [management] already a few years and I have worked with many, many good players and had difficult decisions to make, but to leave him out for the first time, knowing what it means to him to be involved on a game day, it was probably one of my most difficult decisions I’ve ever made in this job.”
Farke continued to laud Ayling, saying the Leeds United defender is “probably the best” character he has ever worked with.
A key figure nonetheless
Despite not being included in the starting lineup on Wednesday night, Ayling is still unquestionably a vital member of the team, according to Farke. His leadership qualities, experience, and ability to set standards make him valuable whether or not he is actively involved on matchday.
With Djed Spence back, Archie Grey appears to be the preferred choice at right back, so Ayling’s playing time may be more constrained going forward. Although the 32-year-old saw limited action in recent months, he started eight of the first ten games.
Notwithstanding this, Farke seems certain that Ayling will be prepared to join Leeds United at any time when needed.

Before leaving the team in 2016, Byram played 151 games in total during his first stint, scoring 11 goals from the back.
Since then, he has played for teams like Norwich City, Nottingham Forest, and West Ham. He left the latter at the end of June after his contract at Carrow Road expired.
Leeds made a wise business move by deciding to bring him back, and he is quickly regaining his popularity.
Following their victory over the Swans, Farke’s team is now third in the table, seven points behind Ipswich Town in second place. This coming weekend, they will play at home against Middlesbrough.
