According to Jon Newsome, Joel Piroe’s influence on Leeds United games is now insufficient.

Piroe participated throughout the whole 90 minutes as Leeds was held to a 1-1 draw against Rotherham United in the opening match following the international break. It was a very frustrating evening for the team.

However, the 24-year-old has only scored one goal in six games, and after the game, he expressed his want to see more from him on BBC Radio Leeds.

Within seven minutes, Leeds had grabbed the lead at the New York Stadium thanks to a goal from Crysencio Summerville. However, they were unable to sustain their lead and were penalised at halftime.

Leeds subsequently lost a great chance to get closer to the top two before their match since Daniel Farke’s team never really got going in the second forty-five minutes.

Leeds still not getting the best out of Piroe

While Piroe’s link-up play might be useful at times, Newsome feels that he is too often a spectator in games.

“I think he was in and out of the game,” he remarked. “He’s got deft little touches, good on the ball at times, and takes up some good positions.” However, he is not present in the game and does not, in my opinion, currently have a significant impact on it. I’d like to see a little bit more if you’re not scoring goals.

Piroe is still not playing at his best for Leeds, and against Rotherham, he was far too frequently picking up the ball too deep, which is a very inefficient way to score.

In the end, it may come down to tactics, where Piroe is being instructed to get overly involved in build-up, but when he is not scoring goals, he is not giving enough to the team.

That being said, Piroe also needed to improve because he had a good number of shots during the game that fell short of actually challenging the ‘keeper.
