Spurs facing possible ‘transfer ban’ or even ‘relegation’ as FA confirm they are looking into serious allegations
The Football Association has said that it is currently investigating claims of major violations by Tottenham in a Jermain Defoe move.
Yesterday, it was announced that the regulatory body would have the opportunity to examine the claims of agency rule violations pertaining to Defoe’s 2008 transfer to Portsmouth.
It was alleged that agent Mitchell Thomas, who played a key role in arranging the £7.5 million transfer, might not have had the required licence to act as an agent at the time of the transaction.
Even if the FA did nothing about it at the time, new events have brought the issue back to light.
Ian Tuckey of The Sun claims that the ongoing investigation is a serious one, suggesting that the clubs, players, and agents involved may face harsh consequences.
According to Tuckey, the consequences may include warnings, penalties, or bans for the involved parties, as well as transfer bans, point deductions, or even relegation for the teams.
He stated:
“Clubs could be hit with a transfer ban, points deduction or even RELEGATION, while agents and players could be hit with anything from a warning to a fine or ban.”
It’s not good news for Tottenham since the FA has now acknowledged that they are investigating the claims, as reported by The Times.
Everton is the most recent team to lose 10 points for breaking FFP regulations as they have begun to take action against transfers related infractions.
Furthermore, this is not the first instance of its kind. In 2007, Luton Town received a 10-point deduction for failing to pay an agency; similarly, in 2017, the owner of Leeds United received a one-year ban and a fine for violating agent regulations.
The fact that neither Tottenham nor Portsmouth has made a remark on the matter highlights how serious and delicate the situation is.
Spurs could suffer a great deal as a result of the impending harsh penalties, considering how far they have come since the summer.
It begs the question: How come Manchester City, who have been charged with more than 100 FFP violations, is not facing any consequences, but we are the subject of an investigation into an event that occurred over 15 years ago?
