“It will happen” – BBC pundit backs “top signing” for Tottenham in January

The Spurs want to improve in a few important areas. With rumours that manager Ange Postecoglou is looking to bring in new players, Tottenham has been supported to make a “top signing” in January.

Spurs need to sign player alternatives for Postecoglou

With the January transfer market scheduled to open in around a month and a half, Spurs are reportedly keeping an eye on a few potential targets. Recent injuries and suspensions have severely weakened Postecoglou’s team. In their 2-1 loss to Wolves on Saturday, Spurs were forced to play without their outstanding quartet of James Maddison, Micky van de Ven, Cristian Romero, and Destiny Udogie. This resulted in a serious lack of depth for Tottenham.

Though Postecoglou courageously stuck to his high line, Eric Dier, Ben Davies, Emerson Royal, and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg fit into the aforementioned’s positions; none of them truly had the necessary influence.

Spurs may very well argue that they need alternatives to Maddison and van de Ven, even though they are anticipated to return early in the January transfer window.

Prior to a demanding season, it will not be unusual for important players to miss time due to injury or suspension. Van van Ven is especially important to Tottenham because of his lightning-fast speed, which enables Postecoglou to be successful with a high Spurs defensive line.

Similar-type defenders, including Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi, Everton’s Ben Godfrey, Chelsea’s Trevoh Chalobah, Bournemouth’s Lloyd Kelly, and Uruguay’s Sebastian Caceres, have all been connected to Spurs since van de Ven’s hamstring injury.

Tottenham is rumoured to be looking for another midfield player as Pape Matar Sarr and Yves Bissouma are expected to be departing for the Africa Cup of Nations next year, and sources suggest that Hojbjerg is eager to leave.

In 2024, Postecoglou would only have access to Oliver Skipp and Rodrigo Bentancur in this situation, which is something Spurs would really need to change.

Hutton backs “top signing” at Tottenham

After hearing these rumours of possible action, former Tottenham right-back Alan Hutton, speaking to Football Insider, backed Spurs to make a “top signing” in the middle of the season.

Kelly, a defender for Bournemouth, is said to tick “a lot of boxes” by the BBC analyst, and the Scotsman anticipates his previous team will be busy.

“It’ll be very interesting to see who they bring in, and I think it will happen, a top signing, for sure,” said Hutton.

“They do need defensive reinforcements as we’ve seen after a number of injuries. They look thin at the back so it’s something they will look at. Kelly’s got lots of experience in the Premier League.

“He’s a good size, good with his feet and ticks a lot of boxes. He’s somebody they’ll have an eye on but I’m sure there’ll be lots of players that are working hard in the background to see if they can make the squad better.”

When the international break ends, Spurs will play Aston Villa, and it will be interesting to see how Postecoglou sets up with so little tools at his disposal.
