Fabrizio Romano has said that Tottenham Hotspur will not spend ‘crazy money’ in January and are not desperate to make signings unless the right options are available.

For the past few weeks, Tottenham’s January plans have been the subject of much discussion and writing. According to Football Insider, the club’s top priorities are to sign a defensive midfielder and a center-back.

In particular, a lot of conjecture has surrounded Spurs’ rumoured pursuit of a center-half, with players like Lloyd Kelly, Trevor Chalobah, and Marc Guehi believed to be on the North London team’s wishlist (GiveMeSport).

After Manor Solomon and Ivan Perisic’s injuries, there have also been hints in more recent times that Ange Postecoglou’s team will want to reinforce their wide areas (Tribal Football).

But after using up most of the Harry Kane transfer money in the summer before the striker joined Bayern Munich, David Ornstein said in a Q&A on The Athletic last week that Tottenham does not have much money to spend in January.

Now, Romano has made a similar suggestion, saying that the Lilywhites will search for openings in the last few days of the window.

He told Caughtoffside: “On Spurs, we know they have some injuries in defence at the moment, but they are not desperate to sign cover. It will depend on opportunities.

“They’ve been unlucky because they’ve had a lot of injuries at the same time, but I’m told they won’t panic because they know most of these players will be back at the end of December, so they’ll assess the situation then.”

In general, I don’t see Tottenham going overboard with their January expenditure; that’s not the current plan. They are content with the current balance of the team, but they may search for opportunities closer to the end of the January transfer window because of the importance of some key players’ recuperation times.

 

It is likely that agents acting in the game are the source of the information that people like Romano and Ornstein are relying on for their assertions.

Even though Tottenham hasn’t often made big-money acquisitions in January, I think the team will shock everyone by being quite active in the transfer window this year.
