Postecoglou’s injury problems at Spurs
After leading Spurs to their 4-1 loss to Chelsea last week, Ange Postecoglou was having the best start as a new manager in Premier League history. However, injuries and suspensions have dragged the Australian back to earth.
James Maddison and van de Ven are both out with injuries, and two key players from Tottenham’s early-season success, Destiny Udogie and Cristian Romero, are now suspended from the team.
After Maddison’s ankle injury was formally confirmed by Spurs, the manager of the Lilywhites disclosed that his issue is more serious than initially believed and that he may not be able to play until 2024.
Van de Ven will also miss some time due to injury. Earlier this week, he barely made it off the field while clutching his hamstring.A major blow to Postecoglou, who will be missing both of his great center-backs against Wolves and later in the game, is that van de Ven will be sidelined until January. The two players join Richarlison, Ryan Sessegnon, Ivan Perisic, Manor Solomon, and Richarlison on the treatment table; the latter is having surgery for a pubic bone problem.
Hojbjerg ready for makeshift centre-back role
Due to his severe lack of depth at center defense, Postecoglou will need to get inventive, as his only senior option at the moment is the out-of-favor Eric Dier. Ashley Phillips, a summer acquisition, might also be needed as the young player is a contender to replace van de Ven and Cristian Romero.
Prior to lately, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg hardly received any league minutes. In January, he was even connected to a move abroad, but he is now supposedly prepared to contribute.
According to a reliable source, there are claims that some “sources” think Hojbjerg “will be up” to filling in as van van Ven’s temporary central defense replacement. Hojbjerg was a mainstay under Antonio Conte, and he was among Tottenham’s finest in the last third of the pitch in terms of tackles and interceptions made per ninety.
Reporter Seb Stafford-Bloor has described the former Southampton star as “sensational” at times, and Postecoglou has also described him as a “very important” player—a description that might be more accurate now than it has ever been.
“He has also been very important in a lot of the games that we’ve won late or had to shore up late,” said Postecoglou on Hojbjerg.
“He has been one of the people who has helped us and it is not like he hasn’t contributed at all. He’s been a really important part for us.
“We wouldn’t be in this position if we were just reliant on our starting XI. It is something we impress on all of the guys that as disappointed as you are at not starting, it doesn’t mean you are not playing. You are still playing at some point and what you do with those minutes will help us be successful and push your own cause.”
