Tottenham: Ange Postecoglou explains how he picks perfect signings for Spurs

The team’s incredible start to the season has been aided by players like Guglielmo Vicario, Micky van de Ven, and James Maddison.

While his summer acquisitions are performing exceptionally well this season, Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou has opened up about his recruiting approach.

Spurs spent more than £150 million on new players throughout the summer, bringing in players like James Maddison, Micky van de Ven, and Guglielmo Vicario while Harry Kane left for a club record transfer.

The club’s hiring has been crucial as Postecoglou has led his new squad to the top of the league with an undefeated start to life in north London. Along the way, he has set a record for the best start by a new manager in Premier League history.

“First of all, they don’t seem like players to me—they’re people,” he said to FourFourTwo. “Especially at this level, there are a ton of incredibly gifted players in the globe.

“People talk about recruiting, but it’s pretty hard to get it wrong as they’re all so good. It’s more about the fit. Do they fit into the football we want to play? Are they the right kind of personality?

“That’s a big one for me – with the way we play, you need to have a certain mindset as an individual, to be brave and to want to challenge yourself on a daily basis.”

Deals involving first-choice targets are not usually completed by Spurs. For instance, the club expressed a great deal of interest in David Raya, who was at Brentford at the time and is currently on loan at Arsenal, until they decided not to pursue the player after gaining authorization to speak with the play.

Postecoglou emphasized how crucial it is to ensure that every player he adds to the team has the proper drive to be successful for Spurs.

The manager went on to say: “Before we sign anyone, I always have a little bit of a chat to the player, just to get a feel for the kind of person they are. Not to pass any sort of judgment on them, but to see if they really understand, and what’s their motivation for coming to us.”
