Manchester City are lining up €75m A-list replacement for Kalvin Phillips, in incredible show of financial strength: report

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola gestures on the touchline during the English Premier League football match between Manchester City and Nottingham Forest at the Etihad Stadium in Manchester, north west England, on September 23, 2023.

One of the most intriguing players in international football is the target of a “major push” by Manchester City to add him to their midfield.

Following Rodri’s dismissal against Sheffield United, the Citizens have played three domestic matches without their talisman metronome in center midfield, and they have lost all three games. To further imply that his boss Pep Guardiola doesn’t have confidence in him in the biggest games, Kalvin Phillips was benched against Arsenal in favor of the young Rico Lewis.

With Manchester City pursuing Declan Rice, who is headed to the Emirates, in the summer, it’s evident that Guardiola wants another defensive midfield option in addition to Rodri. Now, a transfer expert claims that the Treble champions will make a “major push” to recruit a player from the top shelf.

Joshua Kimmich, a standout for Bayern Munich, has been linked with a transfer to the Etihad Stadium by transfer insider Graeme Bailey, who claims the German player might be the A-list solution Guardiola is searching for to stabilize his midfield.

According to Bailey, City and other interested parties are most concerned with Kimmich’s willingness to leave Bayern, therefore it is the key question on their minds. Expect a strong push if he does demonstrate that willingness.

In a move reminiscent to Phillip Lahm, Kimmich began his career as a right-back before switching to a midfield position later in his career. Lahm, Kimmich’s predecessor at Bayern, worked closely with Guardiola to develop into a top-tier No. 6 player.

Working with Guardiola at City would not only help Kimmich develop as a midfielder; additionally, because of his entire skill set, which the Catalan prefers for full back positions, he could play either side as a full back.

But it’s unlikely that the 28-year-old will be inexpensive. The current record for a sale held by Bayern is the €45 million that PSG spent for Lucas Hernandez, and as a key component of Die Roten’s side, City may be expected to smash that mark.
