Spurs: Ange could sign bigger talent than Johnson in £52m “phenom”
Brennan Johnson may not be the best talent available to the Lilywhites right now. Although Tottenham Hotspur made significant investments during the summer, it appears Ange Postecoglou is not happy with the team he now has.
Who could Spurs sign this winter?
With the additions of Micky van de Ven, Brennan Johnson, and James Maddison as the three standouts, the team had strengthened critical areas, but there was still one apparent transfer error that persisted: they had not even made an attempt to replace Harry Kane.
Richarlison’s inability to perform in that position has forced Heung-min Son to fill in for him out of position because the Lilywhites have already made significant purchases and have not used any of the £100 million acquired to buy a new striker.
With reports in Spain indicating their renewed interest in LOSC Lille marksman Jonathan David, this January may be the ideal chance to make amends.
It is anticipated that a sum comparable to the €60 million (£52 million) that was put on his head in the summer will be required to wrest this lethal weapon from France. But doing so would represent a significant improvement over their previously reported Deadline Day purchase, that man Johnson.
How good is Brennan Johnson?
With the £47.5 million spent to bring in Nottingham Forest, it was a large investment, but with a 22-year-old player, it was also an investment in the future.
After all, the Wales international was coming off of a strong season in which he had scored eight goals in his first Premier League season and provided assists for three more.
Postecoglou was anticipating a lot from his electrifying speed and versatility across the front line, and given that he managed to register 1.4 shots and 0.8 critical passes per game the previous season as well, it is obvious that his presence is going to be difficult for the opposition to handle.
But despite just being a year older than David, who has been constantly dazzling at the highest level for years, the young winger pales in contrast.
How deadly is Jonathan David?
The Canadian international had a particularly strong campaign last year, scoring 24 goals in Ligue 1—only Kylian Mbappe and Alexandre Lacazette scored more. This happened a year after he had once again scored 15 goals in the league, including three goals in the Champions League as they lost to Chelsea in the round of 16.
A player with such consistent ability was obviously going to garner attention, but podcaster Tony Marinaro would go farther and claim the 23-year-old was actually one of the best forwards in the entire world: “To all Canadians, appreciate Jonathan David. He is a game expert. He performs all the proper actions. He is a phenomenon, to put it simply. The best striker in the world is Canadian.

Despite the fact that Postecoglou has created an environment where success can flourish, Johnson exhibits a truly dazzling talent, but given David’s experience at his age and Postecoglou’s current level of freedom, Johnson’s potential is not even near to David’s.
The former Genk winner has already played 120 times in Ligue 1, and he also has a long list of appearances in Europe. Spurs’ top player, who makes £70k per week, is only recently coming off of his debut season playing in the Premier League.
The two are not comparable at this point, but if David makes the change, they might wind up helping each other by working together to steer the north London team toward a more promising future.
